The causes which precipitated the conflict between the sections and the momentous events which attended the struggle have been recounted by writers competent to the task. But descriptions of battles and civil convulsions do not exhibit the full condition of the South in the crisis. To complete the picture, social characteristics and incidents of private life are indispensable lineaments.
It occurs to the author that a plain and unambitious narrative of her recollections of Washington society during the calm which preceded the storm, and of Virginia under the afflictions and sorrows of the fratricidal strife, will not be without interest in the retrospect of that memorable era.
The present volume recalls that era in the aspect in which it appeared to a woman rather than as it appeared to a statesman or a philosopher. When she was three, Rice went to live with her aunt and uncle, Dr. She accompanied them to Charlottesville in , where she was educated by tutors from the University of Virginia.
In , she married Roger Atkinson Pryor, a lawyer. In , Roger was elected to the U. I was a new teacher, fresh out of college. Gail was a firebrand. She cared so much for our students. She taught with such love and so much enthusiasm. Gail was the epitome of a creative, effective teacher. I will always appreciate the influence Gail had on me and what I strove to be. I remember the first time I saw Miss Inzerillo when I enter my English Class it was magical for me - we became friends and remained friends and we reunited on Facebook - She was an extremely sweet person and a caring teacher.
The kind of teacher you only see in movies or on TV unless you knew Mrs. Gail was a master teacher that allowed her students at east junior high school to fulfill their dreams and aspirations. I feel blessed to have worked with this warm and caring lady. Larry you are once again with Rosie. You have led a life of service to your country and community. I will always remember all the times at your and Rosies house when I was young. The humor and details in your stories always made them special. Where would I have been if I hadn't met Gail Latella?
She was shopping in Bloomingdale's one night and I was working behind the counter and after a brief conversation I expressed to her that I wanted to become a teacher. Through her I was able to connect with Brentwood and send in my application. She guided me through the process and when I received my masters in education from Hofstra University I obtained a job in the Brentwood School District.
Throughout my 18 years of teaching in Brentwood I have travelled to foreign countries with colleagues, taught some great students and made lifelong friends along the way. When I met Gail little did I know that she gave me a chance to work in education and I am forever grateful. Thanks Gail - I'll never forget you. One of the greatest friends of Long Island Agriculture and Horticulture. His work an time spent with us all will never be forgotten.
What a wonderful experience it was working at East MS and seeing you in action. A remarkable human being. Rest in peace Gail knowing you have left a beautiful legacy to those who came in contact with you. It was almost a half a century ago that Gail was my English Teacher for one year. One year and she deeply and completely changed my life. She had a rare and beautiful quality of seeing people from the inside out, and expressing back to you what you came here to do. She did it with honesty And humor. When someone shines a light on your profound self and tells you who you really are, you are never the same.
It truly is the most beautiful gift you can give another human being. My whole life I have checked in with Gail. I never missed an opportunity to tell her how she was one of the people who enlightened my life. The fact is Gail is one of those rare human beings who shines a light for others, She holds the light, till you can find your way, and then she laughs when you try to give her attention. The earth will not be the same without you. How often do you see that? The earth shifted the day you left. You did good Gailie. You did a very good job. Thank you for taking such good care of my mind, my heart and my soul till I could do those things for myself.
I love you forever, Mary Guoan Petricone. My Great Aunt was a great woman.
Never to be forgotten- loved and cherished by all who knew her. My heart breaks to think that such a lovely soul has left us. We only knew our brother a short time but I thank God we are blessed to have memories to hold dear. The splitting image of our father with a gentle way and sweetness that was all his own. Our dad was able to meet, spend time with and connect with the son he thought was lost to him so many years before the end of his own life. Garry had a wonderful way of looking at life. One could see it in the love he had for his wife Linda and all his kids and grandkids.
His face would light up with pride and love when he would talk about them. Until I see you again brother of mine. Much love- sister of yours. The children at school always loved you. There were only a handful of teachers kids did not complain about and you were one of those teachers. May you walk with the angels knowing your light will continue to burn for all of those that love you. It has been twenty years when we finally learned by accident that we had an older Brother. When we learned of this, all of us in far out Kansas were happy to connect with Garry and Linda and their wonderful family.
We have shared some treasured memories these past few years and the loss of Garry can only be comforted by the knowledge that he is with the Father he only got to know later in life and with the Mother he lost so many decades ago. It is with such sadness that he has left us but, we had a Brother who was lost to us for fifty years and fortunately was found. Ralph, Daniel and Barbara Sinnett and family. When she was inflicted with this horrible illness, she was more concerned about how it would impact those she loved than for herself.
I know her light will continue to shine upon all of us to make the world a better place! Deepest sympathies to the Inzerillo and Latella families on the loss of Gail. Wishing you all comfort and peace during this difficult time. We will always remember our visits to the aquarium. Thank you for sharing your love and respect of animals and nature. You were always encouraging and easy to talk to.
We will never forget you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this most difficult time. Love you Aunt Christine. I know God has a ton of red change purses there for you. Forever in our hearts, your love and compassion for all living things will never be forgotten. Thank you for sharing your life with us. Remembering your warm smiling greeting every holiday and every time I was looking for you or Robin at the shop. My heart aches for your loving wife my sister and for your amazing son and daughter. You and Robin showed the world what soulmates look like.
With much love and deepest sadness. Hey Christine, hope you're once again happily singing and dancing to those rock tunes you so used to love! It's a sunny, spring day in Nyack. Larry is playing first base. There is a runner on first as I take my stretch. I spin and throw to first. The ump's right arm goes up. Thanks for the memories Larry. Thanks for being a great fiend. Glad you are home. I'll miss your vivacious energy, your joyful laughter and your positivity. As I reflect on our relationship my brother, I just want to say "Thank God for you" because you had such a profoundly positive influence on my life.
Thank you, thank you for everything, from the words you would say to bolster my self image as a child to the encouragement and support you gave me as a teenager.
Thanks for the love you gave. I know God is cradling you in His arms but I will miss your loving spirit. Rest in Peace my brother. Jim and Family- Our condolences on your mother's passing. May her memories bring you comfort. To the Nosworthy Family, my deepest sympathies. Ken, Rest In Peace. You will be missed greatly by your family and friends. Larry was my next door neighbor while I was growing up in Bohemia,NY. You could not have better neighbors than the Comodo family. When ever Larry and I would get together or have a chat he always mentioned his beautiful wife Rosie.
Everyone knew Larry, the town has lost a wonderful person. My sincere condolences to his family. I will miss you immensely We were heartbroken to hear the sad news of the passing of our beloved cousin Dell. He was a remarkable and extraordinary man who left a great impression the instant you met him. He was disciplined and principled, yet possessed a wonderfully warm and welcoming air, as well as a great sense of humour.
He always wanted the best for his immediate and wider family and would always do his utmost to help ensure our happiness. He was so loved by our family. We have particularly fond memories of the holidays where he hosted us in Jamaica and the time he spent with us during training in England. His legacy is the strong and accomplished children and grandchildren he has left behind.
Our condolences to you all and to Verona. We thank you Dell for everything you did for us and the happy memories you helped to create. Thank you for everything that you did for us. What a wonderful person and we were all blessed to know you. Dear Maria and Family, we are all thinking of you at this difficult time. I hope you find peace soon and know Anita is off on a wonderful new journey. Our deepest condolences to you Geppie and your family during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. I will read your beautiful letters and cards that mean so much to me I still save them.
You will be missed. Sorry Chris I cannot attend I am under the weather today. Love to your family. Chris and Don, Our heartfelt sympathies on the loss of your mother. Whenever I brought my family back to Long Island, a visit to the Louidice house on Barbara Court was always on the itinerary. Louidice always accommodated our 'drop in' as if it were a scheduled visit, and allowed us to reminisce for hours complete with fine food and beverage.
Her charm, her manner and ultimately, her grace will never be forgotten from any member of my family, and probably not by anyone that ever knew her. She was as fine a parent as any that I've known, and I keep the lessons that she taught me close to my heart. May God bless Mrs. Louidice's soul as she lives now in eternity. Quinn, Barbara and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this trying time. Debbie and I are so very sorry for your loss. May Matt rest in peace and the Celauro family find solace in the thoughts and prayers of family, friends and neighbors.
Please accept our deepest sympathy and prayers. Larry went to a rival high school But my memories are more of Larry at college. Always a nice guy. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. My deepest condolences to Geppie and family. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. You are now free to dance among the Angels for all eternity. All my love and prayers to you Maria and your family at this sad time. She was a lovely lady.. A good friend from my college days. So sorry to hear your last years were so hard- I pray for your family.
My sincerest sympathy to Judy, Geppie and Family. My thoughts and prayers are with you. In addition to this virtual candle, we will keep a candle lit here at home in memory of Matthew and a reminder to keep you all uplifted in prayer. Dear Judy, Geppy and Chris- Our words fall short to comfort you but we offer our love, prayers and friendship as you walk through this very difficult time.
Dear "Uncle Jimmy" and all of our dear "cousins" I know my mom is heartbroken to lose her beautiful childhood friend Uncle Benny, as we used to call Mr. Mannarino was a great guy to all of the kids growing up on Elmwood Ave. Always a very reasonable, respectful guy with a kind word.
My condolences to Richie and the entire Mannarino family. I hope that Chris remembers me, Bob Schwartzberg. Ceil always welcomed me to her home, Vinnie was one of my best friends. She always had food for all of us growing teens. Ceil really got angry the time we had a seltzer fight in the garage. My heart goes out to the entire Louidice clan. I will never forget the time while Vinnie jr. Did we get yelled at. She was always welcoming us to come to Sunday dinner for pasta, pizza, etc. Not only is Vinnie missed, but now his mom.
I will always have my memories of Barbara Ct. Hugs Bob and Lynn. Well the time has come to say goodbye. What a trooper you were. You will always be missed and thought of often. Stay strong, please keep in touch.
Safe travels dear friend, we had such fun times. Love to you all. Lighting this candle in remembrance of Cousin Bee which signifies that her memory will still lives on and burns bright. Cousin Bee you have lived your life and fought your battles you are now at peace. Will always be in our hearts. Yamitri, I am so sorry to hear about your Father's passing. I am praying for your family May he rest in Peace. Aunt Mary, you were more than my Aunt.
You were my second mother. I am so grateful for your unwavering love and support throughout my life. Thank you for all you have done for Glynnis and me. May you Rest In Peace. Always in my heart. With God's promise to us all, of everlasting peace, serenity, and love, our deepest condolences. To be exact Gods words at Acts: So we all as family and friends have that promise from Gods words to see our love one sometime soon again, where our loving Creator is going to wipe out every tear from our eyes, and eradicate sickness and death from the face of the Earth as stated at Revelation Our dear father truly cares about us and wants to comfort us in our tribulations as stated at 2 Corinthians 1: So as a family, and a friend please accept these few comforting thought, and hope we all will take it all to heart as real and true.
Many blessing and prayers for Matthew. Much love and Serenity to his mother Judy and entire family. Russ, I was barely more then a rookie, when I was invited to learn and eventually take over for you, as the departments instructor for Traffic Direction and Control. You were kind, patient knowledgeable and entertaining. As a result of your mentoring, I became an effective, interesting, and entertaining instructor for generations of Police Officers, and School Crossing Guards.
You even graciously gave me your "goody bag" of props, to use in the classes.
I was always grateful to you for your guidance and most of all your friendship. We will miss you Russ. Peace be with you and comfort too your family. I used to be a patient. I am sad to hear of Dr. He was a kind and good dentist. May he Rest In Peace. A was the best brother anyone could have. He was the most generous, loving, caring, and selfless person I have ever met or known. He was a God sent; not too many on this Earth. Dell, as he was known in Fellow, was loved by everyone.
He will not only be missed by his family members, but by everyone who came in contact with him during his long life.
The eternal father knows best, so I will say his work here on Earth is done, so he has gone to the eternal father. God bless you brother Dell. Dell as he was known in Fellow. He was loved by everyone. I remember Gep unexpectedly seeing Matt on Fire Island. He embraced him with joy and enthusiasm. Matt was a gift and he gave Ava in return. The pain of losing him is eternal, but he lives on through Ava and in your hearts. No words, no fix for your broken hearts. We know the loving bond you shared with Matt. We remember Matthew as a 5 year old playing with Chandley, Colby and Mark on the beach on Fire Island, burying each other in the sand.
I can still picture Colby reading a story to him before bed. We work together and over the years I would hear many great things about Leslie from Andrea; especially about his warm personality and his love of laugh! I admire Leslie, his warm loving family and send my thoughts, prayers and strength to them all. May he rest in peace. The staff at Starlight Children's Foundation wanted to send our thoughts and prayers to the Spevack Family. What an amazing life Chris led; we are honored to have been a part of it. He is an inspiration and he will remain in our thoughts. Please let us know if there is anything we can do.
I am blessed because of her prayer life. She never failed to cover me in prayer. I am also blessed because she choose to make me family and for this I am ever so grateful. The memory of Cousin Bee will always remain in my heart. Aunt Marion thank you for all the good memories growing up and having you near. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
You were such a good friend to everybody you met. I have so many great memories of you growing up.
You are greatly missed. My deepest condolences to your family and friends. To Kathy and Peter's family: We are good friends of your parents and lost track of them over the past year. We are sad to hear that both are gone. Please accept our deepest sympathy on your loss. We will keep them in our prayers. Thank you for all that you have done for all of us throughout our lives you were always there for us.
Mom you will be missed and you will be forever loved. Joanne Iam very sorry to hear about Roy he was a good Egg ,we worked at Midtown together for many years. Had many laughs together and good times. Aunt Cecilia Louidice was one of the first "strong women" I have known. She was fearless, even daring to lovingly stand up to my dad, the Might Marty. She never once forgot a birthday and told me she prayed every single night for all her neices and nephews, never leaving anyone out.
She and Uncle Jimmy were ours role model of a loving marriage. She will always be an inspiration to me, forever in my heart. Blessed be Aunt Cecilia. Aunt Ceil was a role model for me since my teenage years. I was required to interview a working woman for a class at school. I chose Aunt Ceil and had a two hour session with her - just the two of us - on her life as a secretary and subsequently as a typist from home.
She was so far ahead of her time in terms of her outlook on life, her sense of identity and her sense of personal empowerment. I learned so much from her. Later in life it was a joy to introduce her to Ray, my husband of 43 years. Ray met his match in Aunt Ceil. What a joy she was. She will live on forever in our hearts.
She was a great woman and lived a very long life.
Marcus you may have lived on this earth a short time, but you were born to loving parents and loving family members. Remember you are not alone because I know your grandfather welcomed you with open arms. Your parents will meet you again some day and you will know they do love you very much. Keep a watchful eye over all your Family. Thank you for the unconditional love that you gave me. While I became disconnected from most of my extended family after I entered the Army in , I do have found memories of Ron when our parents would take all of us out on the Bay or over to Fire Island in the summers of the 60's.
Please know that you, Stacey and Ron Jr are in my thoughts and prayers despite the distance and time. Rest in Peace Ron and Peace be with your all. What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. We may not understand why they left this earth so soon, or why they left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, you will begin to remember not just that your loved one died, but that they lived. And that their life gave you memories too beautiful to forget. You are in our thoughts, hearts, and prayers.

Dear Maria you was a wonderful loving woman and willl be missed by everyone , Rest in peace dear friend, you left a wonderful daugther , grand children family and friends that will never forget you , now in Gods hand where there is no pain and suffering until then dear friend , Will meet again one day in. My wife Carmela was pregnant with our first of what would become a family of three children.
Bob was operating one the telescopes for the public. He reignited a long dormant passion in me for what would become my second career as an Astronomy Educator and Planetarium Director. We became fast friends, but after a few years we drifted apart for no particular reason. Little did we know that we were both pursuing the sailing life on parallel but separate paths. I have not seen Bob during the last 15 years. By the time we reconnected 6 months ago, Bob was too sick to engage in further social commitments.
I feel his loss deeply and regret the missing thread of what could have been an even more beautiful continuing friendship. I will think frequently of Bob and wish Amy all the best for the pursuit of health and happiness going forward. Gracias por tu amistad. My deepest sincere condolences to you Sis and family. May God continue to comfort and strengthen you during the time. Rest In Peace Chris. Be the guardian angel for your wife Christine and your family. You were very special to so many you met.

Until we meet again Maria! Please accept my deepest condolences on your father's passing. May he rest in peace with our heavenly father. Praying that you find comfort in the memories that you shared and that the love of family surround you and give you strength in the days ahead. My first meeting with Ms Maria was in the Netherlands some years ago. My first impression was a sweet woman who liked to smile and have a good time with family. It was my pleasure to have met her. To the family, my adopted family, know to be absent from the body and present with the Lord is a precious and beautiful thing.
Also, this earth has no sorry, which heaven cannot heal. I pray God will send an angle for comfort in a time such as this. Love you all, Ernie. Rest In Peace Chris we have a angle looking down on Chrissy and family and friends. I have such wonderful memories of Maria. Over 40 years worth.
