My year-old-self was disappointed because I just wasn't scared by the story. Nevertheless, it starts to scare you if you continue thinking about it. There is something creepy about an automaton that seems to be the perfect woman. A person that is, nevertheless, described as dull and mechanical. A young man who can't tell reality from imitation. I also imagine that it was scary to think about artificial humans back when the book was first published in the early 19th century.

You are familiar with Hoffman, although you might not realize it. That famous Nutcracker story that graces the ballet stage every Christmas? He wrote that story. I want you to think about the following things: What is the reality in the book? Just how creepy are dolls?? What about the story really made your hair stand on end? Written in epistolary style, The Sandman grows in intensity, the story taking strange twists and turns until coming to an amazing, horrifying climax. I seriously shivered typing that while I recalled it.

The Sandman is one of the three tales to figure in Jacques Offenbach great opera and presents in a very forceful fashion several of the great themes that dominate Hoffman's work. In this work, Hoffman poses third great questions. The first is what is the effect of childhood fears on our later lives. The second one is why do some individuals pursue illusions when better options in the real world are at hand.

One side of it is that Hoffmann writes tales for adults. Many of us learn to let go of the monsters that would surely come to punish us should we be naughty. Nowhere is the transition as clear as it is here, as Hoffmann builds upon the granny scaring young Nathanael with the story of the Sandman and builds him into a monster that feeds on narcissism, obsession and vanity, when Nathanael becomes an adult. There is ample use of literary parallelism, foreshadowing, metaphore and motifs. The descriptions are on point and the plot is sharp and fast-paced, considering.
There is a psychological layer to it, as the mephistophelian villain seems to have no effect on bystanders, and disappears as if he was never there after the first attack. Finally, there is ample use of irony.
This is so many kinds of disturbing that nightmares are inevitable. I freaking loved it, by the way. For a short story, there's several layers of creepy, and there's no black and white so part of its genius is in how many questions you're left with at the end. I want to know MORE. I mean, surely we've all heard of The Sandman, right?

Turns out one of the earlier German interpretations of this fellow had him torturing and mutilating the kids that fought his magic sleep dust.
Apparently, that was inspirational stuff for Hoffman, who turned this brute into the horrifying, eye-stealing monster described in this novel.
Anyhoo, the basic notion of the legend is that it represents how parents feel about their kids. All that's fun and games, but the titular Sandman has overall a rather brief appearance, and is more of a symbol than a character. This story has way more horror beyond our sadistic, nocturnal friend. So basically if you love horror, read it. If you love untangling metaphors and symbols, read it.
If you love myths and legends If you love short stories that deliver chills almost immediately, read it. Hoffmann before the Sandman is part of my assigned reading for a class I'm taking this semester but it was a really good read. Reminded me of Frankenstein in a lot of places Nathanael's actions and letters basically screamed Victor Frankenstein to me as well as the origin of him and Clara's relationship especially with the whole 'how far can we go with science and technology in terms of humanity' thing that Olimpia represented.
The am I really enjoyed this. The ambiguity in the story was what really stuck with me- was Nathanael mad? Was the Sandman actually real? The decline into madness was also interesting; I kept seeing the repetitive things Nathanael would say in the last page or two and his almost mechanical and involuntary actions and being reminded of Olimpia's 'words' that never changed.
I felt like he almost became a machination himself. May 11, Ava rated it really liked it. I am a German native and used to the style this book was written. However, I did read it in English and have to say this was an excellent translation. The story itself suited my taste in "creepy" books. It started with the letters written to Nathaniel's friend Lothar. It made me curious how Hoffmann will unravel the story and if he chose to have a happy ending.
At times I felt Stephen King might have borrowed from him, since it reminded me a bit of his stories. Nathaniel ci racconta nel proseguo della lettera che, quando era piccolo, la sera prima di andare a letto, salire con la mamma nello studio dove lavorava il padre, e il padre gli raccontava delle storie, degli aneddoti, oppure gli leggeva dei libri, era un momento particolarmente piacevole.
Il racconto fantastico ha anche queste caratteristiche di orrore. Una sera, quando la mamma lo sospinge fuori dalla stanza del padre per farlo andare a letto, si mette nel suo letto ed, aspetta che la madre vada via, e sgattaiola fuori dalla sua cameretta, apre la porta della stanza del padre e si nasconde in un armadio. A questo punto Nathaniel sviene e noi lo ritroviamo a letto. Questo racconto lo fa sempre Nathaniel a Lotario, ma sbaglia ad indirizzare la lettera ed arriva a Clara. Abbiamo quello che viene definito in termini narratologici come un passaggio di soglia, dal mondo onirico alla mondo della veglia.
Questo passaggio non ci viene spiegato con chiarezza, abbiamo soltanto questo racconto di Nathaniel, che possiamo interpretare in due modi: Questa lettera, che era indirizzata a Lotario, alla fine viene destinata a Clara. Clara, una volta letta le lettere, ne scrive una in risposta.
Adesso si inserisce il punto di vista di Clara, che fa le sue riflessioni. Il vecchio Coppelius era sicuramente un individuo sinistro, ma era appunto il fatto che vi odiasse, a suscitare in voi bambini quella estrema ripugnanza. Nel tuo infantile sentire lo spaventoso uomo della sabbia della favola si riallacciava naturalmente al vecchio Coppelius che, anche se tu non avessi creduto all'esistenza dell'uomo della sabbia, sarebbe sempre rimasto per te uno spirito maligno particolarmente dannoso ai bambini, assimilabile ad uno spirito cattivo.
Sempre rivolgendosi al lettore, prova tre diversi incipit, tre diversi modi della narrazione. Oppure entrare subito "in medias res". Compra questo binocolo che utilizza per guardare nella stanza di fronte. Quando arriva, Nathaniel si rende conto che i suoi compagni universitari gli avevano trovato un nuovo appartamento nello stesso stabile. Nel senso che aveva un ritardo psichico.
