Before long, it was time to graduate high school. My graduation party was held at my summer house in Wisconsin.
Dozens of friends showed up for the big day, including Kimmy. Today Kimmy and I attend college together, building more memories and often looking back on how our friendship began in such unusual circumstances.
We find ourselves laughing at some of the childish things we did when we were younger. Kim and I took part in Take Back the Night at our university.
The night is for survivors of sexual assault and others to go out and take to the streets, chanting powerful words about being survivors and bringing awareness to sexual violence. To my amazement, Kimmy and I were asked to lead the march.
With hundreds of people behind us, Kimmy and I held two lit torches and marched into the night. Every now and then we looked over at each other, smiling, knowing just how far we had both come in life. I believe that everything happens for a reason. If Kimmy and I had never gone through the difficult things that we had, our paths would never have crossed.
In some ways, I see my past as a blessing. Kimmy is one of those blessings The Real Deal Friends.
